Lavender is the essential oil we sell most, and the one most people start with. This guide covers what it is, how to use it at home, what the research says, and how to use it safely.
What is lavender essential oil?
Lavender essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the lavender plant (Lavandula angustifolia). Ours is grown in France. The aroma is soft, sweet and floral, with a clean herbal freshness.
Ways to use lavender oil
- Diffuser. Add 4–5 drops in the bedroom for a restful atmosphere at bedtime.
- Massage. Dilute in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond before applying to skin.
- Bath and body care. Add a few diluted drops to your routine, or choose a ready-made lavender soap.
- Blending. Lavender blends well with citrus oils, cedarwood, geranium, clary sage and peppermint.
What the research says
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH), lavender is commonly used in bath products, perfumes and aromatherapy. The center says it is unclear whether aromatherapy with lavender oil has benefits for stress or sleep quality, although some people report a sense of improved quality of life from it. Many people simply enjoy the scent as part of an evening routine.
