Castor Oil for Skin and Hair: What It Can and Cannot Do

Castor oil has been a home staple for generations, and it is one of the body-care items customers ask us about most. This guide covers what it is, how people use it on skin and hair, what the evidence does and does not support, and how to choose between regular and Jamaican black castor oil.

What is castor oil?

Castor oil is pressed from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). Its main component is ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid. It is a thick oil, which is why a little goes a long way.

How people use castor oil on skin and hair

  • Dry skin. As a thick oil it can help lock moisture into the skin. Many people use a few drops on rough areas such as elbows, heels and cuticles.
  • Hair and scalp. It is used as a conditioning oil to coat the hair and add shine.
  • Brows and lashes. Some people use a small amount as a conditioner. Keep it out of your eyes.
  • Castor oil packs. A traditional practice in which a cotton flannel is soaked in castor oil and placed on the skin.

What the evidence says

It is worth being honest here. According to Cleveland Clinic, castor oil can help lock moisture into the skin, but there is no data showing that applying castor oil makes hair grow, and there is no scientific proof that castor oil packs have health benefits. We sell castor oil as a moisturizing body-care oil, not as a treatment.

Regular vs Jamaican black castor oil

  • Regular (cold-pressed) castor oil is made by pressing fresh castor beans. It is pale yellow.
  • Jamaican black castor oil is made from roasted castor beans, which gives it a darker color and a toasted scent.
  • Both are used the same way. The choice is mostly about texture, scent and personal preference.

How to use it safely

  • External use only. Our castor oil is sold for use on skin and hair. Do not drink it.
  • Patch test first. Castor oil can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction in some people. Try a small amount on your inner arm and wait a day.
  • Pregnancy. Castor oil taken by mouth can cause contractions. If you are pregnant, speak with your healthcare provider before using castor oil.
  • Protect fabrics. It is thick and can stain clothing and bedding.

Frequently asked questions

Does castor oil make hair grow?

There is no reliable evidence that it does. It can coat and condition the hair, which may make it look shinier.

Which is better, regular or Jamaican black castor oil?

Neither has been shown to work better. Jamaican black castor oil is darker with a roasted scent; regular castor oil is lighter in color and scent.

Can I use castor oil on my face?

Some people do, in very small amounts. Because it is thick, patch test first and stop if you notice irritation or breakouts.
