Beet Supplements: Nitrates, Fermented Beets and What the Research Shows

Beet powders and capsules have become popular with active people. This guide explains what is in them, why fermentation is used, what the research shows, and how to choose between powder and capsules.

Why beets?

Beets are a natural source of dietary nitrate. The body converts nitrate to nitrite and then to nitric oxide, a molecule involved in widening blood vessels and blood flow. That pathway is well established, and it is the reason beets are studied in sports nutrition.

What does “fermented” mean?

Our beets are fermented with Lactobacillus acidophilus. Fermentation helps break down plant fibers, which makes the beets easier to digest.

What the research says

The evidence for exercise performance is mixed. A 2025 review of published studies found that beetroot juice taken a few hours before exercise had a small benefit on physical performance, while longer-term use had a negligible effect, and people respond differently. A beet supplement can be a useful part of an active routine, but it is not a substitute for training, sleep and a balanced diet.

Powder or capsules?

  • Powder mixes into shakes, smoothies and food, and lets you adjust the amount.
  • Capsules are convenient, tasteless and easy to carry.
