Prebiotics and Probiotics: What Is the Difference?

Prebiotic, probiotic, synbiotic: the words sound alike but mean different things. Here is a plain explanation, and what to look for when a product combines them.

Prebiotics vs probiotics

  • Probiotics are live microorganisms intended to have health benefits when consumed. The most common belong to groups called Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.
  • Prebiotics are nondigestible food components, such as certain fibers, that feed desirable microorganisms.
  • Synbiotics are products that combine the two.

What the research says

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH), much remains to be learned about whether probiotics are helpful for various health conditions, and effects may differ from one probiotic to another. In other words, what one product does cannot be assumed of another.

What is in a fiber-and-probiotic blend?

Our Advanced Gut Prebiotic & Probiotic combines several kinds of ingredient, and it helps to know what each one is:

  • Psyllium husk. A fiber that acts as a prebiotic.
  • Flaxseed powder. A source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Senna leaf and cascara sagrada bark. Herbs used as laxatives for occasional constipation.
  • A probiotic.

Because this formula contains senna, it is best suited to short-term use for occasional irregularity. MedlinePlus (U.S. National Library of Medicine) describes senna as a stimulant laxative that normally works within 6 to 12 hours, which is why it is taken at bedtime, and advises not taking senna for more than one week without talking to your doctor.

Who should be careful?

  • Serious illness or a weakened immune system. The risk of harmful effects from probiotics is greater in these groups. Ask your doctor first.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Speak with your doctor before using any product that contains senna.
  • Stomach pain, nausea or vomiting. Do not take a laxative product; contact your doctor.
  • Drink water. Always take fiber capsules with a full glass of water.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a probiotic every day?

Probiotic-only formulas are generally used daily. A blend that contains senna is different: use it short term unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Do I need both a prebiotic and a probiotic?

Not necessarily. Many people get prebiotic fiber from vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains.
