Probiotics for Women: Strains, Cranberry and What to Expect

Women’s probiotic formulas usually pair several probiotic strains with cranberry. This guide explains what those ingredients are, what the research says, and how to choose a formula.

What is in a women’s probiotic?

  • Probiotic strains. Live microorganisms, most often from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups. Women’s formulas typically blend several strains.
  • Cranberry. Added for urinary tract support.
  • Carriers such as yogurt powder. Our formula includes organic Greek yogurt.

What the research says

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH), much remains to be learned about which probiotics are helpful, and effects may differ from one probiotic to another.

On cranberry, the same NIH center reports that cranberry products may help prevent symptomatic urinary tract infections in some women, although findings are inconsistent. Cranberry is not recommended as a treatment for an existing infection. If you think you have a urinary tract infection, see a healthcare provider.

How to read the label

  • Number of strains and whether each strain is named.
  • Storage. Check whether the product needs refrigeration.
  • Allergens. Formulas that include yogurt contain milk.
  • Serving size. One capsule or two a day.

Who should be careful?

  • Serious illness or a weakened immune system. The risk of harmful effects from probiotics is greater in these groups. Ask your doctor first.
  • Blood thinners. There is conflicting evidence about whether cranberry interacts with warfarin. Talk with your healthcare provider.
  • Milk allergy. This formula includes Greek yogurt.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Check with your healthcare provider.
